Internet bring new means of communication such as social networks or email. those who do not access it are sidelined and not taking advantage of these benefits to open to the world. 82% of the world's online population of 1.2 billion users now use social networks.

Access to high-speed connections such as DSL and cable modems, represent a new dimension of digital divide. With the rapidity of technological change, very many people who thought yesterday have sufficient technological skills and now find themselves sidelined and  destabilized.

About a quarter of whites and a third of Asians have of broadband access at home, unlike the Mexicans who have the lowest rate.

Only one of out ten Mexican-Americans has a hi-speed connection at home.

In most countries the gender differences are usually smaller than other gaps. In the case of the US, the difference in the rate of users among men and women is almost irrelevant, only around 2%

War Toy Ad

Another major challenge for e-commerce is to deal with different cultures and rules from different countries.  Ads for war toys like these are banned in Greece, but not in the U.S.  If this ad was shown on a website hosted by the U.S. and a citizen from Greece happened to find it, that citizen could file a court order to have the company in the U.S. take the image down.  The question is, does the company in the U.S. have to comply with Greek rules?

This image is a logo of the ITU which stands for International Telecommunication Union. The ITU created the Electronic Commerce Developing Project in order to assist developing countries in establishing necessary infrastructure to create electronic business transactions in order to bridge the gap between highly developed countries and less developed countries.
