Event Summary:

San Diego is no longer just a Navy town with beautiful beaches. Our economy has diversified into several key sectors: tourism, military and the emerging innovation industries of IT, cleantech and biotech.

As the world economy regains momentum, the potential of international trade in our mega-region increases. There is a concerted effort by industry to look closer to home for means of manufacturing. What does this mean for our innovation sector?
megaregionwithjobs
How will the convention center expansion impact our economy and jobs?

Will federal sequestration cost San Diego tens of thousands of jobs? How will this effect our small business owners and the average citizen?

We are seeing growth in the real estate market and reduced unemployment - beating the national averages. Have we turned the corner toward sustainable growth?  What is the plan for the coming years?

How resilient is today's San Diego economy?

Join us and our 2 special guests who are at the center of these future plans.

 Speakers:

Jerry Sanders Headshot

Jerry Sanders

President and CEO

San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce

Jerry Sanders began his lifelong career in public service when he joined  the San Diego Police Department at the age of 22. In 1999, Sanders retired as Police Chief and became CEO of the United Way of San Diego. In 2005 he was elected as Mayor to San Diego. Under his control the city financial staff completed six years' worth of back logged audits, allowing the city to return to the public bond markets. This helped to fund the mayor's commitment to repair San Diego's long neglected water, sewer and transportation infrastructure. Sanders introduced Managed Competition to city government, which allows private companies to compete against city employees for the right to provide a variety of municipal services. In addition to his broad reform agenda, Sanders placed a high priority on economic growth and job creation during his term as Mayor. He has been a champion of the region's promising clean technology industry including solar energy, biofuels and other environmentally friendly products.  Sanders completed his second and final term as Mayor in December 2012. Jerry Sanders currently serves as the President and Chief Executive Officer of the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Executive Director, Mega-Region Initiative
San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation

The Cali Baja Mega-Region Initiative for the first time articulates the intimately enmeshed international economies of San Diego and Imperial Counties (USA) and Baja California (Mexico) as a distinctly advantageous development zone for global commerce. This positions CaliBaja as the emerging 12th economic "mega region" in North America, with distinct advantages compared to the Southern California Region immediately to the north, centered on Los Angeles County. Conceived, secured funding, developed community-wide consensus and commitment, and implemented bi-national strategy based firmly in current economic development theory and best practices. * Developing bi-national website and online interactive asset map to focus on the unique blend of economic support the Cali Baja Mega-Region has for targeted strategic industries. Prior to coming to San Diego Christina was a Project Manager at the International Energy Agency in Paris France.
