San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant

The San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) has provided power to San Diego since 1968.  Reactor 1 was shut down in 1992 due to increased maintenance/retrofit expenses.  Reactors 2 and 3 have been de-powered  after finding excessive wear in the steam pipes.  The Fukushima Daiichi disaster in Japan has re-awakened the surrounding communities to the safety issues of nuclear power who question the need to restart such a risky power generation facility. 

We have two thoughtful voices that will talk about the issues, costs, myths of the SONGS plant.

Rochelle Becker

Alliance for Nuclear Responsibility

Rochelle Becker has been active on nuclear safety issues in California for 35 years. She co-founded the Alliance for Nuclear Responsibility in 2005 to focus on her experience working with elected representatives and oversight agencies - both state and federal.  Rochelle has testified before the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, California Energy Commission, Regional Water Quality Control Board, as well as the state legislature and Congress. She is currently intervening on license renewal issues at the CPUC and sits on the state's review committee analyzing water-related impacts from aging reactors.  Rochelle Becker graduated from the University of San Francisco.

  Murray E. Jennex is an associate professor at San Diego State University, editor in chief of the International Journal of Knowledge Management, editor in chief of Idea Group Publishing's Knowledge Management book series, co-editor in chief of the International Journal of Information Systems for Crisis Response and Management, and president of the Foundation for Knowledge Management (LLC). He holds a B.A. in chemistry and physics from William Jewell College, an M.B.A. and an M.S. in software engineering from National University, an M.S. in telecommunications management and a Ph.D. in information systems from the Claremont Graduate University.  Dr. Jennex is also a registered professional mechanical engineer in the state of California and a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP).
