Event Summary:
 

A zero energy bill every month for your electricity? The concept is compelling...and feasible.

 

Net Zero Energy Buildings are buildings that produce as much (clean) energy as they use over the course of a year, through a combination of:

  • Exemplary building design to minimize energy requirements, and
  • Renewable energy systems that meet these reduced needs

Under California's recent revisions to Title 24 (the state's energy code aimed at reducing energy use in new and altered homes and commercial buildings), all new residential construction is to be Zero Net Energy (ZNE) by 2020 with all new commercial buildings achieving ZNE by 2030. The code also applies to retrofit projects that pass certain thresholds. These changes promise to reshape the construction industry in significant ways.

 

In this month's 100% Renewable San Diego event, experts will share with us their experiences in building clean buildings and provide knowledge on how to move towards making your home, office, store or other building Net Zero.

Phil Bona

BNIM Architects

Phil Bona is a Senior Architect and Planner at BNIM in San Diego. Previously a Principal at Baucentrum Urban Studio, Adjunct Professor at NewSchool of Architecture & Design, Chair San Diego Urban Design Committee of the AIA, and Assistant V.P. for Architecture and Planning with CCDC, his expertise encompasses sustainable regional and urban design principles and policies supporting green building, renewable energy, water conservation and climate impact reduction. He has a Master of Architecture from the University of California, Berkeley; and will discuss recommendations on future development in the region.

 

 

 

Bill Powers
Bill is one of the country's most respected engineers in utility and energy resource management. He has shaped strategy to achieve renewable energy objectives for the country's leading public and investor-owned utilities. Bill Powers is the principal of Powers Engineering, an air-quality-consulting engineering firm established in San Diego in 1994. He is a respected analyst on issues relating to electrical transmission, power plant emissions, and permitting.
 
 
 

Beth Brummitt
Beth founded Brummitt Energy Associates in 1998 to focus on high performance buildings. With over 25 years experience in energy efficiency and building modeling, she has been training and speaking on the Title 24 energy codes since 1992 and on green building since 2001. She is a graduate of Stanford University and is former Chair of the California Association of Building Energy Consultants. Beth is President of the San Diego Green Building Council, recently returning after founding the organization in 2002. She also co-chaired the San Diego Living Building Challenge Collaborative. She helped SDG&E to develop the first Zero Net Energy Case Study for commercial buildings, and focuses on strategic energy planning to guide our clients through the energy performance planning process.
