Better World Campaign Launches www.UnitedInPeacekeeping.com
Interactive website details how UN Peacekeeping Missions promote American Interests Today, the Better World Campaign announced the launch of www.UnitedInPeacekeeping.com, an innovative new website highlighting active United Nations peacekeeping missions around the globe and how they enhance American interests. “The United States authorized each of the 17 active peace operations around the world, but we discovered an information gap in explaining how peacekeeping directly serves American national security and foreign policy interests,” said Peter Yeo, Executive Director of the Better World Campaign. “We developed this website to be both educational and interactive to keep Americans informed about the vital role peacekeeping plays in making the U.S. more secure.” For more than 60 years, the United States has provided critical resources, trained peacekeepers, and authorized the creation of more than 60 field missions. Today, over 116,000 UN peacekeepers serve around the world -- the second largest deployment of troops globally after the United States. The range of peacekeeping activities spans from stabilizing regional conflicts, to facilitating free and fair elections, to protecting civilians during crises. UN peacekeeping bears the burden of international security at just a fraction of what it would cost for any individual country to go it alone, greatly reducing the burden on the United States. And it has been proven to work -- over 70 percent of post-conflict countries where UN peacekeepers have operated remain stable. “A stark example of the importance of UN peacekeepers is the recent relief and recovery mission in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake in Haiti. Working together with the United States, UN peacekeepers were on the ground to rescue and treat those affected, as well as coordinate relief efforts,” Yeo continued. “As the world grows more interdependent, global conflict will increasingly affect our own national security. That is why U.S. participation at the United Nations, including the full payment of our peacekeeping dues is critical. I encourage everyone to visit www.UnitedInPeacekeeping.com and learn more about how together, the United States and the United Nations can overcome the global security challenges of today and tomorrow.” ### About the Better World Campaign The Better World Campaign (BWC), an initiative of the Better World Fund, works to strengthen the relationship between the United States and the United Nations.
