How energy use affects our climate and what that means for San Diego
The importance of water in San Diego, and how climate will affect water supplies.

The largest power potential from wind in the spring, summer, and fall typically occurs in the evening and early morning when the regional load demand is not at its peak. Although the
wind resource peak power potential does not coincide with the peak of the regional load demand, wind can still be used to meet some of the Region’s energy needs. Figure 4.1 illustrates the seasonal hourly wind potential.
Increasing renewable energy not only improves air quality, but it increases energy security by diversifying our energy portfolio. In addition, renewable energy sources like solar systems can produce energy during peak usage times to help with excess demand on the grid -- for example, when it is hot and there is high demand for air conditioning, solar photovoltaic systems generate more power.
SDG&E has invested $485 million in energy efficiency programs, saving over 2.9 million megawatt hours of electricity over the last 15 years

The project will promote California clean energy consumption in renewable wind, solar and geothermal energy sources by 2012, during expected project completion. The renewable energy sources via Imperial Valley will be transported to electricity customers throughout San Diego, a plan that will reduce energy bills and provide hundreds of jobs in the community. The ‘superhighway’ is expected to carry at least 1000 megawatts of renewable energy in the 500-kilovolt grid, powering up to 650,000 homes.
Although the actual amount and pace of development of renewable energy resources will be determined by factors such as cost, incentives, regulatory policy, economics, and individual customer decisions, the message of this report is clear. Technical potential exists to serve a substantial amount of the Region’s capacity and energy needs with renewable power.
